Not long ago, Cricket Exchange reports that Manchester United have officially begun contract renewal negotiations with Spanish midfielder Juan Mata. After Wayne Rooney was dropped from the starting lineup, Mata truly came to life, taking over the No. 10 role and excelling in passing, playmaking, and attacking duties. His work ethic and consistency have earned the respect of both the club’s management and manager José Mourinho, making a new deal increasingly likely.
The talks are already in motion, and Mourinho has given his approval. Ironically, it was Mourinho who once cast Mata aside during their time at Chelsea, selling him to Manchester United in January 2014. Back then, few would have imagined the two reuniting at Old Trafford, let alone Mourinho changing his stance on the Spanish playmaker.
When Mourinho took over at United this summer, speculation swirled that Mata would be the first player shown the door. But Mata stayed quiet, kept his head down, and worked tirelessly in training. As Cricket Exchange highlights, his patience paid off. In the match against Leicester City, Mata was outstanding—he covered the most ground of any player on the pitch (11.34 km) and became the first United player this season to record both a goal and an assist in a single game.
Compared to Rooney, Mata’s movement is far more fluid, and he contributes on both ends of the field. According to The Sun, Mata is eager to stay at United, where his current contract runs for two more years with a weekly salary of £130,000. Club executives reportedly share his desire to extend the deal. One insider told Cricket Exchange, “Talks with Mata are underway. He’s not fully sure about his future yet, but he wants to stay. He’s fallen in love with life in Manchester.”
Ultimately, whether Mata stays may depend on Mourinho’s long-term plans. Manchester United doesn’t want to drag out the process and is aiming to finalize the extension before the end of the year. Since joining the club in January 2014, Mata has made 91 appearances and scored 23 goals. This season, he’s been a good luck charm—United won all four Premier League matches in which Mata started, while losing the two he didn’t.
Alongside Mata, Cricket Exchange also reports that United is preparing to extend contracts for Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford. Lingard is said to have agreed to a new four-year deal that will raise his weekly wage to £50,000. Rashford is also expected to receive his second pay bump in four months, with a new salary matching Lingard’s—making him one of the highest-paid young players in world football.
